The US Election is in Hours, Joe Biden-Donald Trump Are Still Intensively Seeking Support Via Campaigns

Donald Trump and Joe Biden have spent their final hours leading up to the US election delivering a closing message to voters in a state that is a critical battleground.

Launching the BBC, Tuesday (3/11/2020), President Trump visited a number of states such as North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan, while Joe Biden campaigned in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

National opinion polls show a positive lead for Biden in this election. But narrower lead in some states can determine the end result.

More than 97 million people cast their votes in the initial ballot, even putting the country on the path to the highest turnout in a century.

In US elections, voters decide on state-level contests rather than national elections as a whole.

To become elected president, a candidate must win at least 270 votes in a system known as an Electoral College.

Each US state gets a certain number of votes partly based on population and there is a total of 538 up for grabs. This system explains why a candidate may win the most votes nationwide - as Hillary Clinton did in 2016 - but still lose the election.

After fulfilling a scheduled demonstration in six states on Sunday, President Trump resumed campaigning in four more on Monday.

In North Carolina, he told supporters that "next year will be the greatest economic year in the history of our country".

He touts figures he said "nobody even thought this was possible".

The US economy saw a record 33% growth in the third financial quarter of this year, following a record 31% contraction in the second quarter.

But economists warn of the damage caused by the pandemic and has been the biggest downturn in the US economy in more than 80 years and is still taking years to overcome.

After North Carolina, Trump headed for Scranton, Pennsylvania, the city where his opponent lived until he was 10 years old. At a rally there, he reminded supporters that he won the state in 2016 even though opinion polls suggested he would lose.

Meanwhile, Biden also traveled to Pennsylvania where he joined singer Lady Gaga at a rally in Pittsburgh.

On the other hand, famous musician John Legend also spoke to voters along with vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

At a last-minute campaign stop in Ohio, Biden repeated his core campaign message, telling voters that the race was about the American soul. He said it was time for Trump to "pack his bags", saying "we're done with Twitter tweets, outrage, hatred, failure, irresponsibility".

On Sunday, candidates were still attacking each other on the two main themes of the campaign, namely Covid-19 and racial tensions.
