Winning the US Election, Joe Biden Promises to Remove the Prohibition of 7 Muslim-majority Countries Entering America
On the first day of his presidency, United States president-elect Joe Biden promised to lift a ban on travelers from 13 countries, 7 of which are Muslim-majority countries, from entering Uncle Sam's country. This controversial policy was first introduced in the era of President Donald Trump.
The Trump administration has rewritten the order several times amid lawsuits and the Supreme Court endorsed a version agreed upon in 2018. Countries subject to entry restrictions have changed over the years.
The ban could easily be overturned because it was issued by executive order and presidential instruction, policy experts say, but lawsuits from conservatives could delay the process.
In October 2020, Biden also promised to encourage politicians to enact laws to combat the growing number of hate crimes in the US.
"As president, I will work with you to tear the poison of hatred out of our society to honor your contributions and seek your ideas. My administration will look like America with Muslim Americans serving at every level," he said.
"On the first day, I will end the unconstitutional ban on Muslims (entering the US) implemented by Trump," said Joe Biden, quoted from Al Jazeera, Sunday (8/11/2020).
Trump imposed travel restrictions - often called by critics a "Muslim ban" - through a series of executive orders that selected Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen, sparking criticism that it constituted unlawful religious discrimination.
Trump later expanded the ban to include Venezuela and North Korea, then added Nigeria, Sudan, Myanmar and three other countries to the list.
"The Muslim community is the first to experience Donald Trump's attack on the black and brown community in this country, with its heinous Muslim ban. The fight is a series of openings in what has been nearly four years of constant pressure and humiliation," said Joe Biden The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization in the US, congratulated Biden on his victory and reminded him to keep his campaign promises.
"President-elect Biden has pledged to end the Muslim Ban on his first day in office, including Muslims at every level of his government and tackle the issue of racial and religious discrimination," said Nihad Awad, CAIR's national executive director.
"We plan to join forces with other Muslim American leaders and organizations to ensure that the Biden administration lives up to these promises. We also plan to continue to hold our government accountable if things go wrong."
