Palestinian important figure Saeb Erekat dies due to Covid-19, 'the day of mourning is set for three days'
One of the important Palestinian political figures in the last 30 years, Saeb Erekat died at the age of 65, after being hit by Covid-19.
Erekat died in an Israeli hospital in Jerusalem, where he has been treated for the past month or so.
His condition was reportedly critical after being infected with Covid-19 and being treated with the help of a ventilator, according to an Israeli hospital.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas described his death as a great loss for the Palestinian people and set a day of mourning for three days.
A number of Israeli figures who collaborated with Erekat in the negotiations, expressed their sorrow.
Those officials include former foreign minister Tzip Livni and former minister Yossi Beilin.
Saeb Erekat has been the negotiator in talks with Israel for more than two decades, and is fighting for a full Palestinian state.
Erekat was one of the originators of the 1995 Oslo agreement, the first peace agreement between Israel and Palestine.
He also strongly opposes President Donald Trump's peace plan regarding the Middle East.
Erekat has served as secretary general of the Palestine Liberation Organization, PLO and a member of the most powerful Palestinian faction, Fatah.
