Biden Cabinet Appoints Ambassador to UN
US President-elect Joe Biden appointed veteran diplomat Linda Thomas-Greenfield to join the upcoming Cabinet as UN Ambassador, his transition team announced Monday. The post must be approved by the Senate.
Thomas-Greenfield worked in the Democratic and Republican governments during his 35 year career in the State Department. He is an expert on Africa and has served as US Ambassador to Liberia, and has held positions in Kenya, Gambia and Nigeria.
Under President Barack Obama's administration, he served as Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of African Affairs (2013-2017), developing and managing Washington's policies for sub-Saharan Africa. He has also worked in Geneva on the US mission to the United Nations.
Thomas-Greenfield is a former senior manager at the State Department, where he served as Director General of Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources from 2012 to 2013, dealing with issues relating to 70,000 State Department employees.
“I have the honor of building relationships with leaders around the world over the past thirty-five years. As US Ambassador to the United Nations, I will work to restore America's position in the world and renew relations with our allies, "he tweeted.
